What's the deal with "the"?

"The" is one of the most common words in the English language--and it is also many times mispronounced by English learners.

There are two ways to pronounce "the": "thuh" or "thee." Once again, the way you pronounce this word depends on how the word that follows it sounds.

Usually, "the" is pronounced with a short "e" sound: "thuh," and it is pronounced that way when the word following it starts with a consonant sound (the first letter might not be a consonant, but it could have a consonant sound.) Here are some examples:

the house (thuh HOWS)

the car (thuh KAR)

the dog (thuh DAHG)

the unique situation ("unique" starts with the consonant sound, "y.") (thuh yoo NEEK)

the one and only ("one" starts with the consonant sound, "w.") (thuh WUHN and OHN lee)

If the word following "the" starts with a vowel sound, it is pronounced with a long "e" (as in "thee.") For example:

the apple (thee A puhl)

the egg (thee EHG)

the ice-cream (thee AIS kreem)

the orange (thee OR uhnj)

the umbrella (thee uhm BREH luh)

the honest man (the "h" in "honest" is silent; it starts with the "o" vowel sound.") (thee AH nuhst man)

Also, if you'd like to emphasize a particular word, you would pronounce it with a long "e" and stress it in the sentence. For example:

I saw the (thuh) president yesterday. (ai sah thuh PREH zuh duhnt YEHS tur day)

Did you say you saw the (thee) President--of the United States? (dihd juh say yuh sah THEE PREH zuh duhnt YEHS tuh day)
