Oh, nough!

Many, many words end in "...ough," and there are 6-10 possible ways to pronounce those words: sometimes they sound like a vowel, or a diphthong, or a consonant. Unfortunately, there aren't any rules to let you know how to pronounce words that end in "ough," so you'll just have to become familiar with each word and its pronunciation.

Here are a few of the ways "ough" can be pronounced:

though (as "o" in "go") (thoh)

through ( like "oo" in "too") (throo)

cough (like "off" in "offer") (kahf)

rough (like "uff" in "suffer") (ruhf)

plough (like "ow" in "flower") (plow)

ought (like "aw" in "saw") (aht)
